Horn Pond in Woburn is a great place for watching beautiful sunsets, taking relaxing walks, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, fishing (no power boats). There is a main walking path around the pond or you can venture into the many trails.

If you decide to hike up to the top of Mount Towanda you can take in the majestic view of surrounding cities and towns. You will even be able to view the Boston skyline.

May 2, 2009 - Horn Pond - Trail Marking and Improved Map Project
Untitled 1

A project was kicked off on May 5, 2007, to improve trail marking at Horn Pond, and create an improved trail map. This project has been a coordinated effort between WREN and the Woburn Conservation Commission. Several wooden posts were initially installed along two trails to the west of the pond. These are known as the George W. Olson and William Ginevicz Memorial Trails. In 2008, a number of these posts were better anchored. On Conservation Day 2009 (May 2), all but one of the remaining posts were installed.

Wooden posts have now been placed not only along the Memorial Trails (those identified with red or orange bands) but also at several major trail intersections, identified only with numbers. Numbered posts correspond to numbered positions on a map. On the Memorial Trails, additional posts without numbers (but with colored bands) are included to help direct your path. The following temporary map provides the location of the posts along the major trails.

Untitled 1

Also accomplished on May 2 was a completion of the marking for the rerouting of a small section of the Memorial Trails to avoid walking along part of a golf cart path. Posts now guide you onto the new section.

All that remains to be done is reinstallation of Post 1 and then the fabrication of a larger, more formal (and more detailed) map and guide for the Horn Pond area. When ready, the map will be available at this website.

Acknowledgment:

Mark Rosenblum sought out  interest and help from WREN at the start of the project, followed by meeting with the Woburn Conservation Commission.  A core team met regularly to discuss various aspects of the project: Members included Mark Rosenblum, Gerry Kehoe from WREN and John Tancredi from the Woburn Conservation Commission.  Scott Gatchell, also from the Conservation Commission, prepared all the posts and was the major coordinator for the Conservation Day installation work each year.  The entire Conservation Commission supported this project and helped make this happen.
