 WREN's Mission Statement
WREN (Woburn Residents' Environmental Network)
We are dedicated to helping Woburn conserve and protect our environment and natural resources. We will work with our neighbors and our City officials to promote environmental awareness, support community conservation activities, and implement educational programs that develop a sense of environmental stewardship.
PREVENT FLOODING / SAVE SPENCE FARM
The Spence Farm neighborhood group continues to work on the information to be shared in a public meeting on January 26. Now that a there is a purchase & sale agreement by a developer on the final parcel of land - the city has the right of first refusal. An alternative plan will help prevent flooding by keeping the fields open and free from full development - at NO COST to the city!!

Please plan to come and bring along family and friends on Thursday Jan. 26, at 7:00 PM at the Farm Stand - 41 Wyman St.

 Tri-Community Bikeway - Meeting - Tuesday,December 20th at 7pm
All-

As you are aware, the Towns of Winchester, Woburn, and Stoneham are moving forward with the 75% design for the Tri-Community Bikeway. Our consultant, FST anticipates submitting the final 75% design plans to MassDOT in early 2012. One of the key items to be addressed in the 75% plans is the design of the trail “amenities”,such markers, signage, benches, etc. Our goal is to have a consistent set of amenities throughout the three communities to ensure a cohesive look and feel to the trail.

To this end,I would like to organize a meeting on Tuesday, December 20th at 7pm in the Waterfield Room of Winchester Town Hall (basement level) to discuss these design issues with FST and their landscape architect Waterfield Design Group. I know next week may be difficult for some due to the holidays, but I hope we can get at least some representation from each of the three communities and the Winchester Design Review Committee at the meeting, with the intent that this discussion may spillover into the New Year.

Please respond with your availability as soon as possible. If there are others not included on this email list from your community that may be interested, please feel free to invite them as well. I will send an email on Monday confirming the meeting, assuming we can get a fairly good turnout. (For the Winchester folks, I will post this as a Greenway Committee meeting).

Thanks again and please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Rag Rock Conservation Area - Sep 24, 2011 Cleanup
Thanks to Sylvio, a Woburn resident and WREN volunteer, the Rag Rock Conservation area trails are cleaner today. On September 24th Sylvio worked his way up the trail from Harrison Ave/Bacon St picking up trash and discarded cans and bottles. He removed several bags of trash and cans and is donating to his church all the proceeds from the cans and bottles that can be recycled.

A project was kicked off on May 5, 2007, to improve trail marking at Horn Pond, and create an improved trail map. This project has been a coordinated effort between WREN and the Woburn Conservation Commission. Several wooden posts were initially installed along two trails to the west of the pond. These are known as the George W. Olson and William Ginevicz Memorial Trails. In 2008, a number of these posts were better anchored. On Conservation Day 2009 (May 2), all but one of the remaining posts were installed.

Wooden posts have now been placed not only along the Memorial Trails (those identified with red or orange bands) but also at several major trail intersections, identified only with numbers. Numbered posts correspond to numbered positions on a map. On the Memorial Trails, additional posts without numbers (but with colored bands) are included to help direct your path. The following temporary map provides the location of the posts along the major trails.

Untitled 1

Also accomplished on May 2 was a completion of the marking for the rerouting of a small section of the Memorial Trails to avoid walking along part of a golf cart path. Posts now guide you onto the new section.

All that remains to be done is reinstallation of Post 1 and then the fabrication of a larger, more formal (and more detailed) map and guide for the Horn Pond area. When ready, the map will be available at this website.

Acknowledgment:

Mark Rosenblum sought out  interest and help from WREN at the start of the project, followed by meeting with the Woburn Conservation Commission.  A core team met regularly to discuss various aspects of the project: Members included Mark Rosenblum, Gerry Kehoe from WREN and John Tancredi from the Woburn Conservation Commission.  Scott Gatchell, also from the Conservation Commission, prepared all the posts and was the major coordinator for the Conservation Day installation work each year.  The entire Conservation Commission supported this project and helped make this happen.
